History, Overview and Area Activities

Northern New Mexico

The highlights of this slice of northern New Mexico are varied from the mountain landscapes, to natural hot springs and wild rivers. It’s known for the artists who have worked for generations in Abiquiú, Santa Fe, and Taos and the entrancing landscapes they made famous as well as the cultural richness of their art.  It’s home to the highest peak in the state and the cavernous Rio Grande Gorge. Eight Native American pueblos dot the region and six ski areas draw visitors for year-round recreation.

Northern New Mexico is a cradle of ancient civilizations, with descendants of the Ancestral Puebloans, Pueblo peoples, Diné (Navajo), and Jicarilla Apache still inhabiting and preserving their languages, traditions and ways of life.  The arrival of Spanish explorers and settlers in the 16th century introduced a new layer of cultural influence, creating a unique blend of Indigenous and Spanish traditions evident in art, architecture, and community practices.

Northern New Mexico is home to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the highest peak in the state, and the Rio Grande Gorge, a 74-mile-long volcanic gorge. The Rio Grande River flows through the heart of the region, creating a fertile valley and a landscape of unique beauty.

Taos Historic Pueblo

A visit to Taos Pueblo is a visit to the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. The multistory adobe buildings, located 3 miles northeast of Taos Plaza, have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. Archaeologists say that ancestors of the Taos Natives lived in this valley long before Columbus “discovered” America and hundreds of years before Europe emerged from the Dark Ages.

The main part of the present buildings were most likely constructed between 1000 and 1450 C.E. and appeared much as they do today when the first Spanish explorers arrived in Northern New Mexico in 1540 (The Spanish believed that the Pueblo was one of the fabled golden cities of Cibola). The two structures called Hlauuma (North House) and Hlaukwima (South House) are said to be of similar age and are considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States.

Red River

Red River, NM offers a wide variety of activities for all ages and interests, particularly during the summer months when the Red River Ski & Summer Area opens for fun beyond skiing. Visitors can enjoy outdoor adventures like hiking, horseback riding, off-roading, and fishing, as well as more relaxed activities like shopping and enjoying live music. Specific activities include hiking to scenic spots like Wheeler Peak and Goose Lake, exploring the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area, and taking advantage of the summer activities at the Red River Ski & Summer Area

Zip-lining & Scenic Chairlift Rides

Experience fresh alpine air and breathtaking views as you zip through the mountains on the Angel Fire Zipline Adventure Tour.

During the 40–50-minute tour, you will enjoy exploring our four ziplines with two professional guides to help you along the way.

Chairlift Access Included: Your zipline ticket includes unlimited scenic chairlift rides on the day of your tour, weather permitting. Soak in the views all day long, so feel free to hop on the lift earlier or stick around for more scenic rides afterward.

Horseback Trail and Wagon Rides

Nancy Burch’s Roadrunner Tours in Angel Fire  offers daily horseback riding tours in the Enchanted Circle and Carson National Forest year round. Our horse stables and summer headquarters are located directly across the highway from Angel Fire RV Resort.  Please call 575.377.6416 for reservations.

We offer horseback riding lessons and guided tours from 1-hour to all-day. We offer horse-drawn sleigh, carriage and wagon rides and romantic wedding-day and wedding engagement carriage rides in northern New Mexico.

ATV Trail Rides

Experience an outdoor adventure like no other in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. Most of the year, we offer 2-hour, guided UTV tours. The tours take off directly from our office through the Carson National Forest.

White Water Rafting and Float Trips

This Rio Grande rafting trip traverses the calm oxbows of the Orilla Verde National Recreation Area and is the most popular float section in New Mexico.  The wonderful open canyon allows scenic views of towering basalt cliffs, high desert eco systems and wildlife viewing, a lush riverside habitat, Class II rapids, and plenty of opportunities for swimming and fun. This is a perfect trip for families with young children or groups who are looking for a beautiful, relaxing and fun float

Rally Fees

Your rally fee ($425 for member couples) includes nine catered meals - three of which are dinners, a night of professional entertainment, BINGO, our annual cornhole tournament, an ice cream social, a progressive Happy Hour,  campfires, seminars, and so much more.
